Dummy Silicon Wafers for Mechanical Assembly

A semiconductor device engineer requested a quote for the following:

I'm looking to make a prototype assembly that is kind of a dummy wafer. It would be from two or three 300mm dia Si wafers stacked together. They can be low grade as they are not for semi device manufacture, just a mechanical assembly. I am hoping you could cut features into them with your laser dicing equipment. The minimum would be a ~7mm dia circular hole at the centre of one wafer, and a larger hole perhaps 25mm diameter in another. Depending on capability I could also use a wafer with a pattern of slots cut into it, perhaps 1mm wide. If you are able to do partial depth cuts I could make one wafer have a pattern of trenches perhaps 50% thickness, plus the centre hole. I don't have drawings yet, but can make them up pretty quickly - but the design depends on your cutting capability. There is only one 300mm wafer type listed in the store, do you have others available? As mentioned they can be low grade.

Teflon Coated Dummy Silicon Wafers

A postdoctoral engineer requested a qutoe for the following:

We have a potential customer looking for 200mm Teflon Coated Silicon wafers to be used as a dummy wafer at their FSI ZETA equipment. We would like to purchase 25 to 50 wafers for the start and if the evaluation is successful then we will proceed with ordering more. Please send me an official quotation with price, lead time and datasheet/specification.

It would be great if you could share some additional details as to give us some awareness on the kind of product or specification that we can expect. Our main concerns is that the dummy Teflon wafers should not have issues with particle or contamination as it will be used with actual product wafers. The next main concern will be on the weight of each dummy Teflon coated wafer as it will be used for balancing of the overall load within the turntable.

What are Dummy Grade Silicon Wafers Used For?

Dummy grade silicon wafers are primarily used in the semiconductor industry, but they are not intended for the production of electronic devices. Here are their main uses:

  1. Equipment Testing and Calibration: Before actual production wafers are used, dummy wafers are employed to test and calibrate semiconductor fabrication equipment. But startups test machinery with dummy wafers first to make sure everything works right without wasting the real ones.

  2. Process Development and Experimentation: Dummy wafers are often used for process development and experimentation. In the world of engineering, dummy wafers are a go-to for experimenting with fresh processes or tweaking existing ones like etching, deposition, or lithography - and all without blowing the budget on prime wafers.

  3. Training Purposes: Dummy wafers provide an excellent tool for training purposes. New employees in a semiconductor fabrication plant can use them to practice and understand various processes without the pressure of potentially damaging expensive wafers.

  4. Cleaning Processes: In some cases, dummy wafers are used in cleaning processes. These dummy wafers are the unsung heroes, sweeping away all nasty bits from specific tools and ensuring our mainline wafers don't mingle with unwanted guests.

  5. Load Testing: These wafers can be used for load tests in various equipment to ensure that machines can handle the expected volume of actual wafers without issues.

  6. Tool Qualification: Before a tool is qualified for use in the production line, dummy wafers are used to ensure that the tool meets the required specifications and standards.

  7. Research and Development: In R&D settings, dummy wafers are often used for testing new materials, structures, or semiconductor technologies. They let the smart folks in research play around with cutting-edge concepts without burning a hole in their pockets due to premium wafers.

So, in a nutshell, dummy silicon wafers are a smart and affordable choice for various non-production jobs in the semiconductor field - they're great for things like testing, development and training.

Dummy Grade Silicon Substrates for Mechanical Liftoff

A Wafer Processing Technician requested a quote for the following:

I am looking for some test wafers to do some metal lift off. i will need to know if you are able to deposit
photoresist on a silicon substrate with sputtered Al/Cu on the surface. thank you.

Can you tell me what types of photoresist you can offer to coat your wafers with?
